The Not Quite Light Festival gets underway with an amazing night of music, light and sound performed by artists exploring our haunted city of unresolved pasts and unrealised futures. “HAUNTOLOGY” will feature artists Wilderness Hymnal, Black Lodge, Sean Clarke, Xavier Velastin, Zirkus, Ruby Tingle and Simon Woolham. After the performances, the excellent LoneLady will be doing a DJ set.

LoneLady is a musician, writer and producer from Manchester, and often to be heard on BBC 6 Music. She has performed at Bluedot Festival, and has two-critically acclaimed albums on Warp ‘Nerve Up’ (2010) and ‘’Hinterland (2015) and is currently working on her third. LoneLady also create immersive events and installations such as ‘Shutters Down!’ an occasional clubnight taking place in unusual locations, and ‘Scrub Transmissions’, a sound installation in breezeblock.

Sean Clarke is a Digital artist and Events Producer based in Manchester. Utilizing cutting-edge techniques and software, his artistic practice examines new ways of translating sound into light, while producing events such as Test Card and Drift, which support the growth of local artists. In conjunction with not quite light, Sean will be producing the lighting and live visual narrative for the event.

Wilderness Hymnal is a genre-bending dark music project led by British-Venezuelan musician, producer and visual artist Javier G Wallis.
As both a solo artist and collaborator, he demonstrates an uncanny ability to merge disparate styles into a cinematic, unified whole – augmenting his role as a singer-songwriter with a tectonic blend of psychedelic drone, doom metal and modern classical.
Through this he explores deep personal anxieties around human violence, climate change and powerlessness. Evocative and cathartic, his work bristles with the fears of a generation facing an ominous future, economically and ecologically.
ZIRKUS – EP LINK
Zirkus are the shadowy offshoot of Manchester experimental rock and hauntronica band Flange Circus. Comprising of shifting personnel, but with ABB and Pierre at the centre, Zirkus coalesce around drones, noises and sample manipulation with intended crepuscular impact. Zirkus have released one E.P. (imaginatively titled ‘EP1’) comprising three extended experimental pieces recorded live and in one take. This improvisational strategy lies at the heart of Zirkus’ sonic channeling…
XAVIER VELASTIN – watch a clip of his work here
Xavier performed at NQL 2018 and mesmerised the audience with his soundscapes that brought the sounds of the River Irwell to life. He will be producing another specially created work for this event.
Simon Woolham and Ruby Tingle will present a live musical intervention in response to *particular space/place* Combining sound, costume and movement, the artists will perform collaborative songs drawing upon their own personal mythologies based in and around the city. The performance will explore and re-imagine the layers of history and atmosphere hidden in some of Manchester’s unseen spaces.
