TUESDAY 14th October – Tuesday December 2nd 2024

7.00pm – 10pm ( 6 weeks )

Learn how to explore the night with your camera…

Maximum of 8 places to ensure one to one tuition.

NQL HQ, GF 008, The Courtyard, Islington Mill, James St, M3 5HW

Join artist Not Quite Light, best known for his twilight and night time photographs of the city, and learn how to observe the night time urban world around you, and the techniques needed to capture the photographs that you want to take.

Night time in the urban landscape is magical, often full of atmosphere. However, it isn’t always easy to balance the various techniques needed to record this streetlit world, with so many different elements needed to make a successful photograph.

WEEK ONE – The first week will be spent discussing how I approach my work for Not Quite Light. We will also  explore the work of the masters of painting and photography, to see how they used light and composition to create their great works. This will provide a foundation for ways of seeing, and appreciating the approach needed to capture successful night time photographs in the urban environment.

WEEK TWO – In this lesson we will explore the various techniques used to take photographs when it is dark outside, and get to know our cameras. We’ll take a short photowalk to appy the knowledge learned in the lesson.

WEEKS 3-5 – This is when we can really get to the heart of the matter, making some work! Using a mixture of field trips and studio based assessment we will photograph the wider urban area around Islington Mill. We will explore techniques such as long exposure, hand held using high ISO speeds and painting with light.

WEEK SIX – You will also learn basic photo processing, and to edit. At the end of these lessons you will have photographs that you will be proud of.

You will need a DSLR, tripod and laptop so we can download basic free to use photo processing software for this course.

For this course you will need a DSLR or SLR and a laptop with photo editing software.

During the course you will receive PDFs with information and course notes.

Tea and coffee are provided. Any questions emailnotquitelight at gmail dot com

PREVIOUS STUDENTS SAY…

Charlotte, music producer – “Simon is incredibly relaxed and approachable, with no pretension. He explained technical concepts in an accessible way and made sure every
question was answered.”

Sally G, mental health worker –  “The NQL Night School has been a game-changer. Simon’s patient
guidance has helped me not only understand the fundamentals of photography but also feel empowered to make artistic choices rather than relying on happy accidents. It’s given me a sense of purpose and mindfulness during a tough time.”

Sophie H, architect – “Spending Monday evenings at the Not Quite Light studio has been an absolute delight. Simon has a wonderful way of breaking down the complexities of camera functionality and composition into concepts that are easy to understand and apply. His passion for photography made the course really engaging and the balance between theory and hands-on practice was perfect. Each session was really varied and delivered in a relaxed style of learning – a particular highlight was experimenting with long exposures and ‘painting with light’ on a photo walk. The relaxed and supportive learning environment made it a wonderful way to start the week, and I now feel more confident and purposeful in my photography.”
