TAKE BETTER SMARTPHONE PHOTOGRAPHS
8 PLACES £35.00 ( +£1 booking fee )
DO YOU LOVE TAKING PICTURES ON YOUR PHONE, AND WOULD LIKE TO BE EVEN BETTER?
Rainstorm, the picture Not Quite Light is perhaps best known for, was taken on an iPhone 6. The Guardian runs a weekly slot showcasing smartphone photography, and so it’s clear that you don’t need a fancy DSLR to make great photographs.
These days smartphones are very sophisticated, and they take a lot of the guesswork out of expoosing the photograph correctly. However, you still need to be able to ‘see’ the picture, get the best composition, time when when you press the shutter and process the image so it looks professional.
This simple and fun workshop will show you some handy tips and techniques that will help take your smartphone photography to the next level. Not only will we look at how to get the best out of your phone’s camera, we’ll also explore ways of observing the world around you like a photographer, so that you’ll be able to take great pictures on any device. Think how great this will be for travel pictures, or on special occasions!
In the morning we’ll see how the greats of painting and photography go about using lighting and composition, the foundations of great imagery, and then look at the technqiues you will need to make the best of your camera phone.
After lunch we’ll go on a photowalk and take some pictures, before returning to the studio to discuss the photographs you’ve taken and look at some simple processing techniques using free apps readily available for your phone.
You can try out you new found skills on my twilight photowalk around Media City and Salford Quays on the same evening…Click the link to book.

Charlotte, music producer – “Simon is incredibly relaxed and approachable, with no pretension. He explained technical concepts in an accessible way and made sure every
question was answered.”
Sally G, mental health worker – “The NQL Night School has been a game-changer. Simon’s patient
guidance has helped me not only understand the fundamentals of photography but also feel empowered to make artistic choices rather than relying on happy accidents. It’s given me a sense of purpose and mindfulness during a tough time.”
Sophie H, architect – “Spending Monday evenings at the Not Quite Light studio has been an absolute delight. Simon has a wonderful way of breaking down the complexities of camera functionality and composition into concepts that are easy to understand and apply. His passion for photography made the course really engaging and the balance between theory and hands-on practice was perfect. Each session was really varied and delivered in a relaxed style of learning – a particular highlight was experimenting with long exposures and ‘painting with light’ on a photo walk. The relaxed and supportive learning environment made it a wonderful way to start the week, and I now feel more confident and purposeful in my photography.”
