Angel Meadow is where the Not Quite Light project was conceived. It’s been a crucible in Manchester’s history, at the core of change that saw a small, buccolic town become the most famous industrial city on earth. And now, after falling into neglect in the post-indutrial era, the district is once again undergoing a huge evolution, once more mirroring the path of Manchester’s global ambitions.

Today Angel Meadow is a park surrounded by modern apartments, frequented by dog walkers, joggers and people eating picnics. But beneath its turf lies a mass burial ground of 40,000 souls, that tells a different story of people’s lives in the dark days of factories and slums. The story of the meadow is Manchester’s story.

Join artist Not Quite Light and local history guide Emma Fox on a fascinating twilight walk around the meadow and surrounding Irk Valley. Whilst Emma tells tales about the lives lived there, Simon will discuss his Not Quite Light project and what continues to fascinate him about the area, whilst exploring the many photo opportunities in this atmospheric quarter of Manchester.

Bring your DSLRs, smartphones or just your eyes and heart if you simply wish to walk and take in the history and magic of twilight. We can keep an eye out for ghosts…

The walk will begin at St. Michael’s Flags, just near the entrance to the meadow on Old Mount Street. We’ll finish at the Marbel Arch pub on Rochdale Road for a drink and chat about we’ve seen…
