Join artist Not Quite Light, best known for his twilight and night time photographs of the city, and learn how to observe the night time urban world around you, and the techniques needed to capture the photographs that you want to take.

Night time in the urban landscape is magical, often full of atmosphere. However, it isn’t always easy to balance the various techniques needed to record this streetlit world, with so many different elements needed to make a successful photograph.

WEEK ONE – The first week will be spent discussing how Simon approaches his work for Not Quite Light, and also looking at the other work of night photographers. This will provide a foundation for ways of seeing, understanding the various issues to be resolved

and appreciating the approach needed to capture successful night time photographs in the urban environment.

WEEK TWO – In this lesson we will explore the various techniques used to take photographs when it is dark outside, and get to know our cameras.

WEEKS 3-5 – This is when we can really get to the heart of the matter, making some work! Using a mixture of field trips and studio based assessment we will photograph the wider urban area around Islington Mill. We will explore techniques such as long exposure,

hand held using high ISO speeds and painting with light. You will also learn basic photo processing, and to edit. At the end of these lessons you will have photographs that you will be proud of.

WEEK SIX – In week five we will choose one photograph to be printed digitally, and we’ll then display the work as a mini-exhibition in the studio, inviting friends and family down to see the pictures. It will be lovely social event. Refreshments will be provided.

You will need a DSLR, tripod and laptop with basic photo processing software for this course.

For this course you will need a DSLR or SLR and a laptop with photo editing software.

Tea and coffee are provided. Any questions email – notquitelight at gmail dot com

BEFORE THE COURSE BEGINS YOU WILL RECEIVE A PDF WITH INFORMATION AND COURSE NOTES.
